The real purpose of sensory-driven wine tasting (it’s not the wine)

The real purpose of sensory-driven wine tasting isn’t about the wine—it’s about you, the taster.

Last Monday, I was questioned about my approach to remote tastings, in which participants explore the same wine style but often taste different wine brands because they live in different states or countries.

“How can this be useful if everyone isn’t tasting the same bottle?”

It’s a reasonable question—if the goal of a tasting is to compare wines to buy them.
But my tastings are sensory training opportunities and the goal is different: it’s to train your ability to detect, interpret, and confidently describe what you experience.

And that distinction changes everything.

Your senses don’t work like a scorecard. Your brain interprets aromas, flavors, and textures based on what it has encountered before—memory, context, and experience. That interpretation is always personal.

My role as a tasting coach isn’t to tell you what you should smell or taste.
It’s to help you understand how your brain translates sensations—and guide you in expressing them in a way others can relate to.

There are no wrong answers.
Your perceptions are valid because they are yours.

One of my students, Whitney, describes aromas using colors and tactile analogies.
Not fruit. Not flowers. Colors. Texture.

Nothing about that is wrong.

Once she understood that this was her sensory language, I helped translate her descriptions into familiar wine attributes—without erasing her voice. From there, she could repeat the process anytime she tasted wine.

That’s how confidence is built.
Not by memorizing descriptors, but by understanding your own perceptions.

Until now, the Curious Palates community has been a place to explore, practice, and stay curious about wine.
But I saw potential to expand it and address these questions:

“I love this approach… but how do I go deeper?”
“How do I practice consistently and actually get better?”

That’s why I created two new levels inside the community—for people who don’t just want insights, but progress.

Because sensory confidence doesn’t come from the occasional tasting.
It comes from guided, repeated practice.

If you’re ready to move beyond “I think I smell…” and into “Here’s how I experience this wine,” here’s what’s now available:

Curious Palates — Premium
Each month, you’ll explore one wine style through a short, focused course and a guided sensory tasting—where learnings come from interpretation of your perceptions, not correctness.
Past participants in such trainings notice a real shift within three months: more ease, clearer language, and far less second-guessing.

If you join now, you can attend the Sparkling Wine tasting this Monday (replay included). We’ll explore the impact of glass shape on the sensory experience of sparkling wine.

Curious Palates — VIP

For those who want
to train their senses and expand their sensory repertoire deliberately.
In addition to everything in Premium, VIP members learn 8–12 new sensory attributes each month, tied to a specific wine style, and apply them immediately during guided tastings.

That’s an expansion of 30+ sensory descriptors in just three months—not memorized words, but lived sensory references.

To mark the launch of these new tiers, I’m offering a Special Holiday Rate, available until December 23 (end of day). This is the lowest pricing these tiers will be offered.

If you’ve been telling yourself, “I’ll work on my confidence later,” this is a meaningful moment to start. Confidence compounds—and the sooner you practice, the more natural it becomes.
